Dietitians Recommend Comprehensive Approach to Healthy Weights

Toronto, ON March 7, 2013 – Dietitians of Canada (DC) is the professional association representing over 3,000 members in Ontario and over 6000 members across Canada.

Linda Dietrich, Regional Executive Director with DC, notes that childhood obesity is a serious issue. “We are pleased that many of DC’s recommendations to the Healthy Kids Panel are reflected in the final report to government. To support development of healthy food behaviours, and prepare children for healthy active lives a comprehensive approach including education, food skills, healthy environments, and access to advice from Registered Dietitians is necessary.” Further recommendations include providing consumers with easy to understand information on the nutrient content of foods purchased in all venues, and support for making the healthy choice the easy choice.

Dietitians are uniquely trained to advise on food, nutrition, and healthy eating. Consumers benefit from dietitians’ ability to translate complex nutrition science into practical every day healthy eating choices that meet the needs of busy families. Dietitians in public health, primary care, research, industry, and other settings are essential to implementing the Panel’s recommendations, and supporting other practitioners to give evidence-based nutrition information.

Dietitians of Canada looks forward to supporting implementation of panel recommendations through evidence-informed policy and involvement of all stakeholders. Dietrich reminds consumers and health professionals that there are many resources on nutrition and healthy eating available on DC’s website www.dietitians.ca, and that people can also access the expertise of a Registered Dietitian for free through EatRight Ontario’s toll-free telephone number, 1-877-510-510-2, website www.eatrightontario.ca, or email a dietitian directly through the website for a personal response.

Dietitians of Canada represents more than 6,000 members across Canada and is committed to promoting the health and well-being of consumers through food and nutrition.
