First confirmed case of H1N1 flu virus in the five Eastern Counties
Dr. Paul Roumeliotis, Medical Officer of Health at the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, announced today the first confirmed case of H1N1 flu virus in the five Eastern Counties.
“Considering that the virus has been spreading steadily throughout the rest of the province, it’s not surprising that we now have a confirmed case in our area,” says Dr. Roumeliotis. “Fortunately, most cases in Ontario have been mild. However, we continue to remind the public to take simple, but important measures to help protect themselves and others from getting or spreading the infection.”
Simple measures help lower risk of becoming sick
Preventive measures for the H1N1 flu virus is the same as for seasonal flu. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit recommends the following routine precautions:
· Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
· Cough or sneeze into your sleeve rather than your hands.
· Stay home when you’re sick, and keep your children home when they’re sick.
· Avoid visiting hospitals or long-term care facilities if you’re unwell.
· Contact your healthcare provider if you’ve been experiencing flu-like symptoms and your condition worsens.
