Champlain CCAC Welcomes Collaborative Review
OTTAWA - The Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), which is responsible for funding
home care in this region, has requested a review of the Champlain Community Care Access Centre
(CCAC). The CCAC welcomes this opportunity to work with the LHIN to address some of the challenges
it faces in providing equitable access to high quality care.
“We’re committed to being transparent and fully accountable for the resources entrusted to us,” says newly
appointed Executive Director Sheila Bauer. “This is an opportunity to take a close look at some difficult
issues and work together to craft creative solutions.”
The Champlain CCAC provides home and community care and access to long-term care homes to a
population of nearly one million in a vast region encompassing the counties of Renfrew, Prescott and
Russell, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, North Lanark and North Grenville, and the city of Ottawa.
Among the issues that sparked the review is a recent announcement by the new Minister of Health and
Long-Term Care, David Caplan, that signals an expanded role for CCACs in coordinating health care and
connecting various sectors of the health care system. As well, the review will address reasons for the
budget surplus at the Champlain CCAC in 2007-2008, wait lists for some services, and a shortage of health
professionals to provide services to rural clients. “We are passionate about delivering quality care to all our
clients,” says Lynn Graham, Chair of the Champlain CCAC Board. “We are eager to collaborate with the
LHIN in this process and prepare ourselves to play an even more important role as care connectors in the
health system.”
The review will be led by a Steering Committee composed of representatives of the CCAC, the LHIN and
others from the Champlain region. A consulting firm will be chosen through a Request for Proposal process
to implement the review. The CCAC has already begun an internal review of corporate services, and will
make its findings available to the Committee. The consultants will also be asked to research best practices
in case management. A final report and recommendations will be shared with the Steering Committee and
then released to the public.
