Service Description: Palliative care team made up of physicians, an advanced practice nurse, a palliative care nurse specialist, nurse consultants, secretaries, and social workers.

Services:
  • Pain and symptom management services for patients admitted to The Ottawa Hospital (General and Civic Campuses) and patients seen at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre at both the General campus site and at the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre at the Queensway Carleton Hospital
  • Complex cancer pain management for outpatients and admitted patients requiring interventional techniques in collaboration with anaesthesia and the staff at TOH Pain Management Unit (Complex Cancer Pain Clinic)
  • Specialized management of possible complications of cancer and its treatments: including fluid around the lungs and in the abdomen (Malignant Effusion Program)
  • Specialized management of shortness of breath (Dyspnea Management Clinic)
  • Support and advice for patients and families related to end of life decision-making
  • Psychosocial and spiritual support for patients and families during life-threatening illness
  • Links to professionals and agencies that provide palliative care throughout the region
  • Information and education for care providers, professional groups, patients and families

Fees: Set fees, covered by the Ontario Health Card
Application: Referral by a physician
Eligibility / Target Population: Patients receiving services at the Ottawa Hospital or the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Program who require supportive and palliative care interventions for complex symptoms at any stage of their illness
