EOHU Launches Let’s Start a Conversation about Health Video

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) has launched a new video it produced titled Let’s Start a Conversation about Health.

The video was produced to make residents in Cornwall and the five eastern counties aware of the variety of factors outside of the health care system that affect their health, also known as the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH). Examples of SDOH include residents’ social and economic situations, their level of education, and the environment they experience every day, whether at home, at school or at work.

In other words, the SDOH are the circumstances in which people are born, grow up, live, work and age, and they have more of an impact on their health than any health care they’ll receive throughout their lives.

Keeping this in mind, the EOHU is looking into the SDOH of all residents across Cornwall and the five eastern counties to ensure these factors have a positive effect on individuals’ lives instead of a negative one. In the long run, the process should increase the quality of life of area residents and reduce pressures on the health care system.

Residents who want to see the video or learn more about the topic it covers can check out the new SDOH section on the EOHU’s website by heading to www.eohu.ca, clicking on Community Health in the left-hand pane, and then Social Determinants of Health in the list of topics.
