Plan, prepare and be aware during Emergency Preparedness Week

Ottawa – Ottawa residents are encouraged to take some time during Emergency Preparedness Week, May 1 to 7, to plan, prepare and be aware of potential emergency situations in their homes, schools and workplaces.

Emergencies can happen anytime, anyplace and often when we least expect them. Most of us keep a flashlight and first aid kit handy but are we really ready?

Plan
The better-prepared people are for an emergency, the better the City can respond to that emergency. That’s why the City has the Are You Ready? program: a grass-root network of community leaders, agencies and individuals who help deliver emergency preparedness workshops.

Prepare
The most basic, but perhaps most important, step you can take to prepare for an emergency is to put together an emergency kit. Your emergency preparedness kit should contain adequate supplies to keep you and your family self-sufficient in your home for at least three days. Assemble the supplies in an easy-to-carry container and store it in an easy to get to location.

Be aware
For information and ideas about what you can do to be more prepared, visit ottawa.ca, or visit with City staff and Are You Ready? volunteers at one of two emergency preparedness information exhibits taking place next week.

Wednesday, May 4

Carlingwood Mall, 2121 Carling Avenue
9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Saturday, May 7
