safeTALK – Suicide Prevention Workshop

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is now offering safeTALK suicide prevention training to workplaces in the city of Ottawa with the support of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) – Ottawa Branch. As a leader in your workplace, you can bring this meaningful training to employees to promote greater knowledge and awareness of suicide prevention. We hope you will take this opportunity to offer this training in your workplace.

What is safeTALK?
safeTALK is a half-day training in suicide alertness. It helps participants recognize a person with thoughts of suicide and connect them with suicide first-aid resources.

What will I get out of a safeTALK suicide prevention workshop?
safeTALK teaches participants how to become suicide-alert helpers. Suicide-alert helpers are better prepared to connect persons with thoughts of suicide to suicide first-aid resources. Over the course of the training, safeTALK participants will learn to:
  • notice and respond to situations where suicide thoughts may be present;
  • recognize that invitations for help are often overlooked;
  • move beyond the common tendency to miss, dismiss, and avoid suicide;
  • apply the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, KeepSafe;
  • know community resources and how to connect someone with thoughts of suicide to them for further suicide-safer help.

The cost is $60/participant. To schedule a workshop, contact: CMHA @ 613-737-7791.
