Algonquin College Speaker Series Brings CBC’s Rex Murphy and ESPN’s Jonah Keri to Pembroke

PEMBROKE, ON - Two of North America’s leading journalists are coming to Pembroke as part of the Algonquin College Speaker Series. The CBC’s Rex Murphy will host his weekly national radio call-in show, Cross Country Checkup on Sunday, March 1st at the Waterfront Campus, and ESPN Baseball Tonight analyst Jonah Keri will talk about his new book on the Montreal Expos on Monday, April 6th at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Murphy is one of CBC’s most popular radio and television personalities, known for his candid commentaries and matter-of-fact delivery. His live show at Algonquin College will focus on the question of why so many university graduates are enrolling in college programs to find work in their field of study.

Callers from across the country will join the conversation, as will some members of the studio audience made up of college faculty, staff, students and the general public. The show will air at its normal time on Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m. and although space will be limited, it is free to the public.

Jonah Keri, the second in the Algonquin College Speaker Series, is a Montreal native who grew up in the city cheering for the Expos before prospering as a baseball writer in the United States. His new book, entitled Up, Up, & Away: The Kid, The Hawk, Rock, Vladi, Pedro, Le Grand Orange, Youppi!, The Crazy Business of Baseball, and the Ill-fated but Unforgettable Montreal Expos, tells the stories of the Expos early years, the players that made the team so exciting to watch, the heartbreaking loss in the 1981 playoffs to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the crippling players’ strike of 1994 that led to the team’s move to Washington.

Algonquin’s Manager of Community and Student Affairs, Jamie Bramburger, says bringing both Rex Murphy and Jonah Keri to Pembroke is very exciting and good fortune. “These two men are at the top of the journalism spectrum, and to have both of them coming to our community within a few weeks of each other is very special. We anticipate very large crowds for both speakers,” adds Bramburger.

Tickets for Jonah Keri’s presentation are $15 and available at the Waterfront Campus. There is no admission fee to attend Rex Murphy’s live broadcast, however, seating will be limited. As part of its community outreach programming, Algonquin College continues to attract thought-provoking and high profile speakers such as historian Gwynne Dyer, Quirks and Quarks host Bob McDonald, gardening guru Ed Lawrence, and Environment Canada’s David Phillips.
