Bike and Ride pilot helps Orléans residents have cleaner, greener commutes

Ottawa – The City of Ottawa is introducing a bike-and-ride pilot project out of the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex (1490 Youville Drive in Orléans) that provides cyclists, runners and power-walkers an opportunity to combine some daily exercise with their transit commute.

For $5 per month, people can get access to the showers, change rooms and lockers between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The complex is conveniently close to the Jeanne d’ Arc Station, with plenty of bike parking available at the main entrances.

Residents now have another way to combine active transportation with public transportation on their daily commutes,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “This new pilot project leverages existing community assets to provide residents with a healthy, environmentally-friendly option to get to school or work.”

“One obstacle that can prevent people from trying to cycle to work is a lack of showers in their workplace,” said Councillor Keith Egli, Chair of the City’s Transportation Committee. “This pilot project allows people to get in their ride or run, grab a shower, and avoid the traffic by taking the bus – without lugging their workout clothes and helmets.”

“This is a great service being provided to Orléans residents who want to combine exercise with their transit commute,” said Orléans Councillor Bob Monette. “This summer’s construction on 174 and 417 is going to be a busy one. Transit has its dedicated lanes that bypass all the traffic and make your commute quick, easy and convenient.”

People interested in getting more information or wanting to purchase the special pass, can visit the customer service desk, located at the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex. The pass will only provide access to the change room and showers.
