Grand Opening of Bruyère Village

Today marks the official grand opening of the Bruyère Village – our east end community of independent living, assisted living, LTC and healthy aging programs to help individuals 60+ live healthy and well for as long as possible.

What was a dream for many six years ago has become a reality for not only our Bruyère family but for the approximately 500 seniors who will be calling the Village home.

When you create such a unique affordable living community as beautiful as the Village – it’s fun to show off too. To date, many organizations from across the province and country have come to visit this model of ‘community’. For the last three years, the communication team, senior leaders, and members of the community have worked together to promote the Village. From provincial conferences to television commercials – the Bruyère Village is becoming a household name.

Earlier this week we had a very important visitor to Bruyère. Premier Kathleen Wynne made a point of touring the Village along with Phil McNeely, MPP. (See photos here) Several media outlets came out to cover the visit and over 65 tenants came to shake the Premier’s hand.

Via social media, the Premier publicly stated:

The Village is essentially one-stop shopping for adults aged 60 and older. The goal is to provide an affordable living community where people can maintain a healthy lifestyle, remain independent as long as possible, and receive assistance when they need it — without having to move.

The way that we’re going to improve the health care system is if we can provide services when people need them and be more preventive so people can engage in activities that are going to keep them healthy. It’s also to ensure that we have options available in the community to keep people out of hospitals and LTC when it is not required.

Phase two, known as assisted living, opened in January 2014 while phase one, independent living, has been open since November 2012. Phase two is a large four-storey building on the Ottawa River connected to the Résidence Saint-Louis which will house 149 assisted-living apartments. They are designed for people who need help with daily activities, and include weekly housekeeping and a 24-hour emergency response system. For tenants who need a higher level of care, for example if they have mild dementia, 36 of the apartments are bachelor studios, arranged in four clusters of ninewhich share common kitchen, dining and living areas. These are staffed on a 24-hour basis. Activities such as meal preparation or shopping will take place per cluster. In addition, Bruyère has been offering the Assisted Living Service for High Risk Seniors Outreach Program to people living in their homes since February 2011.

Come and see for yourself! Please invite your friends and tell others about this wonderful opportunity. We are all ambassadors. The Bruyère Village is hosting an open house Saturday, March 15 of phase two from 2-4 p.m at 879 Hiawatha Park Road. We hope to see you there!
