Landmark study aims to find the causes of cancer and other diseases - Will help improve prevention efforts by understanding why some people get cancer

Ottawa - In advance of World Cancer Day, Health Minister Rona Ambrose commended the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC) for progress it is making with its legacy study of unprecedented cancer research.

This work, known as the Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project, involves approximately 300,000 Canadians who are sharing information about their health and lifestyle once or twice a year over the course of their adult lives. The data will help researchers try to answer questions about why some people get cancer and other chronic diseases.

Quick Facts

  • February 4th is World Cancer Day.
  • It is estimated that more than 187,000 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer in 2013.
  • Approximately two in five Canadians will develop cancer in his or her lifetime.
  • CPAC is the national, federally-funded organization responsible for leading Canada's cancer strategy.
  • Since 2006, the Government of Canada has annually invested up to $50 million in the Partnership.
  • The Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow Project is one of the largest studies of its kind in the world.

Quotes

"Cancer has touched the lives of Canadians across the country. Our Government is pleased to support the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer and the Tomorrow Project, which aims to find the causes of cancer and help us save lives. Let's continue to work together and share in the hope of finding a cure and work together to raise awareness about cancer."
Rona Ambrose
Minister of Health

"The Canadian Partnership for Tomorrow project is an excellent platform for exploring multiple factors that can influence the development of cancer and chronic disease such as genes, eating and physical activity habits, and cultural background. Individual Canadians are making an invaluable contribution to national and international research and there is still an opportunity for people to enroll."
