Learn About Family Medicine In A Health Team Setting At The February 19th Meeting Of The Pre-Med Club

PEMBROKE – If a career in medicine peaks your interest it’s time you joined the Pre- Med Club. Sponsored by the Upper Ottawa Valley Medical Recruitment Committee, the Pre-Med Club is open to anyone interested in attending medical school.

On Wednesday, February 19th, the group will host its first meeting of the new year in the first floor Fireside Lounge of the Ottawa Valley Health and Wellness Centre (Mackay Street, Pembroke) starting at 6 p.m. with guest speakers, Dr. Joan Tyler and Dr. Jennifer Thomas of the West Champlain Family Health Team who will speak about their career paths.

Dr. Tyler, a family physician with a strong interest in geriatric medicine, graduated from the University of Ottawa’s Medical School in 1983 and completed her training in family practice at McMaster University in 1985.

She then spent five years in northern Ontario’s Elliot Lake before moving to Pembroke where she has practiced for the last 24 years, including hospital-based coverage in obstetrics and the emergency department.

Dr. Thomas graduated from McMaster University’s School of Medicine in 2008 and completed her residency in 2010 at the University of Ottawa where she also completed a Fellowship in obstetrics.

Dr. Thomas then spent a year and a half practicing in providing medical coverage (locums) in Ottawa before joining the West Champlain Family Health Team in May, 2012.

No stranger to the region, Dr. Thomas completed a portion of her residency in the area and provided coverage for some of the physicians in the health team prior to joining the group.

The Pre-Med Club was created for local high school students and others who have a genuine interest in medicine. In order to meet the Recruitment Committee’s goal of attracting local physicians, medical students and residents to our area, this club was designed to offer encouragement, guidance and mentoring to local students and to aid them in preparation for a career as a doctor.

At the Pre-Med Club meetings, students and parents are encouraged to ask questions and gain as much knowledge about the profession and what it takes to be a doctor.

No advance registration is required to attend the meeting.
