Stay Safe With Seatbelts and Child Car Seats

Ontario Government Committed to Road Safety

Ontario is launching its annual seatbelt campaign to remind drivers and passengers to buckle up and make sure children are properly secured in the right child car seats.

Police, fire and emergency services workers, health care professionals and road safety and injury prevention groups across the province are participating in the campaign, which runs until Oct. 11. It includes educational demonstrations, a series of child car seat inspection clinics, and seatbelt blitzes by police.

Wearing a seatbelt and using the right child car seat is the most effective way to reduce the risk of injury or death in a collision. Ontario's One Person, One Seatbelt law requires every occupant in a motor vehicle to buckle up properly.

All caregivers - including parents, grandparents and child care providers - must also make sure children under the age of 16 in their care are properly secured with the appropriate child car seat, booster seat or seatbelt.

Quick Facts

  • Ontario’s roads are among the safest in North America.
  • When installed and used correctly, child car seats and boosteseats can reduce the risk of children being injured or killed in collisions.
  • Recent statistics show that 96 per cent of all Ontarians buckle up on a regular basis – but about half a million still don’t.
  • The most recent Ontario statistics show that people in collisions were 44 times more likely to be killed if they were not wearing a seatbelt.

Quotes

“Ontario’s roads have consistently ranked among the safest in North America. I urge all drivers and passengers to use a seatbelt every time they get in a vehicle and secure children in the right child car seat or booster seat.”
Glen Murray
Minister of Transportation and Minister of Infrastructure

“All Ontarians need to buckle up. It’s the safe and responsible thing to do. Keep yourself and your family safe and secure on the road.”
Mike Colle
Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation

“Wearing a seat belt is not a personal choice, it’s the law, and your decision not to buckle up impacts the safety of everyone in the vehicle in the event of a collision. Ensuring that you and all your passengers are buckled in is the single most effective way to prevent serious injuries and save people from dying in motor vehicle collisions.”
Chief Superintendent Don Bell
Commander, OPP Highway Safety Division

“Seatbelts save lives. Always wear a seatbelt, and make sure children are secured in the right child car seat or booster seat every time you head out on the road.”
Teresa Di Felice
Director of Government & Community Relations, CAA South Central Ontario
