In The Interest Of Public Safety, The Pembroke Regional Hospital Has Authorized Removal Of Three Mature Maple Trees On Bell Street

PEMBROKE - In the interest of public safety, the Pembroke Regional Hospital has authorized a local firm to remove three mature maple trees from its property located on the south side of Bell Street near the helipad.

According to Hospital President and CEO Pierre Noel, earlier this summer, on June 19th, a fourth tree which had deteriorated substantially was proactively removed as it posed a safety risk.

Less than a month later, during a storm on the afternoon of July 17th, a large limb on one of the remaining trees was brought down by high winds and before it could be removed, a second powerful storm two days later, pulled down half of the already damaged tree which lead to the thorough assessment of the trees that remained.

“It was determined, through that assessment, that the health of the trees is deteriorating or has deteriorated to the point of creating a safety risk given their proximity to the helipad, hydro lines and a busy residential street,” Mr. Noel said, adding that based on that it was recommended that removing them in their entirety would be the best course of action.

Work on the removal of these trees is expected to take place shortly and the hospital will reassess the property in the fall to determine whether or not it is appropriate to replace the trees with new growth.
