Ontario Dietitians Publish Best Practices Paper during Seniors’ Month

June 21, 2013, Toronto, ON - As Ontario recognizes the unique contribution of older adults during Seniors’ Month events in June, Dietitians of Canada’s Ontario Long Term Care Action Group announces the release of Best Practices for Nutrition, Food Service and Dining in long term care homes, a working paper dedicated to helping caregivers provide optimal resident-centred care. The Best Practices document outlines processes for planning, delivering, and monitoring the nutrition and dining programs in LTC homes. It is available on the Dietitians of Canada website Dietitians’ Views page.

Linda Dietrich, Regional Executive Director with Dietitians of Canada explains “Healthy eating becomes more challenging as we age, and studies have shown that at least 1/3 of older adults living in the community, and an even greater number of seniors living in residential facilities, are at nutrition risk. So whether living independently or residing in a long term care home, dietitians are working hard to make sure you eat well to age well.” There are many healthy eating resources available free of charge from Dietitians of Canada www.dietitians.ca and EatRight Ontario websites, to help seniors stay healthy and active.

Registered Dietitians work with older adults in many settings, including primary health care, public health, homecare, long-term care, and hospitals. Their unique knowledge and skills makes them a valuable resource to the health system, providing evidence-based nutrition expertise to interprofessional teams and directly to clients.

The Registered Dietitians at EatRight Ontario can answer questions on the nutrition issues important to seniors at no cost to users, by phone at 1-877-510-510-2 or by sending an email from the EatRight Ontario website. EatRight Ontario also has online tools to help seniors menu plan, shop, and prepare healthy food choices. The popular Nutri-eSCREEN online tool is a short eating habits questionnaire that gives older adults immediate feedback on how well they are doing with daily food choices, and gives suggestions and links to resources to help improve eating habits. Health professionals and caregivers can also contact EatRight Ontario for advice and information on community nutrition resources.
