Keeping Ontarians Healthier at Home in Champlain LHIN

Residents of the Champlain Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) now have more options for home and community care that will help them live healthier and more independent lives.

This year, the Ontario government is increasing support for community-based services in the Champlain region, such as:

  • Providing more home-care services such as nursing and personal support to local seniors
  • Providing more services to people with mental health conditions and addictions, including pregnant women and those with opioid additions

(A full list of the local investments can be found in the attached backgrounder chart)

The investment for seniors helps local residents return home sooner following a hospital stay. It also will help free up hospital and long-term care beds, shorten emergency room wait times and reduce the number of readmitted patients. As well, 90,000 more seniors across the province will receive care at home thanks to an additional three million personal worker hours over the next three years.

Increased support for home care and community services helps provide the right care, at the right time, in the right place and is part of Ontario’s Action Plan for Health Care.

Quotes

“The Champlain LHIN is making important strategic investments that will help transform the health system by expanding services in the community settings. In particular, seniors and people with mental health conditions and addictions will benefit from the new programs, which aim to improve quality of life, prevent avoidable emergency room visits, and keep folks healthy at home”.
- Champlain LHIN CEO, Chantale LeClerc

“Today’s announcement will have an immediate and long-lasting impact on the health of residents in our region. We’re putting more resources into community health agencies, addressing the needs of seniors as the population ages, and paying attention to some of our most vulnerable populations. It’s a significant investment.”
- Phil McNeely, MPP, Ottawa-Orleans

“We’ve made the right choice to invest our precious health care dollars where they are most needed – in home and community care. This will allow more Ontarians to live independently at home, and reduce pressure on hospitals and long-term care homes.”
- Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care
