Tips to stay safe and injury free at Halloween

Ottawa - Ottawa’s emergency services would like to remind everyone that a visit from firefighters or paramedics is no treat, and injuring yourself is not a trick anyone wants to see. Please have a safe and happy Halloween by keeping these simple safety tips in mind.

On the street

  • The best costumes are light coloured or bright and reflective. Reflective tape, flashlights and glow sticks help make trick-or-treaters more visible to drivers.
  • Keep costumes short to avoid tripping and falling.
  • Wearing a mask impedes vision, so use face paint instead.

In the house

  • Leave sharp carving tools for adults—get kids to decorate their pumpkins with paint
  • Small battery-powered lights are the safest for use in jack-o’-lanterns. If you use a candle, try a tea light or votive candle in a non-combustible holder.
  • Place candlelit jack-o’-lanterns on sturdy surfaces, away from anything that can burn such as curtains, costumes and other decorations.

In case of emergency

  • Make sure that children know how to call 9-1-1 or their local emergency number if they experience an emergency.
  • Teach children to STOP, DROP and ROLL should their clothing catch fire.
  • Don’t let children trick-or-treat alone—have adult supervision at all times.
