Residents urged to Have 2 Ways Out during Fire Prevention Week
Ottawa – Ottawa Fire Services wants residents to not only have a fire escape plan for every room in the home, but also a backup plan in case the primary exit is blocked. This is why the theme for Fire Prevention Week, October 7 to 13, 2012, is Have Two Ways Out.
In case of fire in your home, occupants should:
- Exit the building.
- Have a meeting place.
- Call 9-1-1 from a safe location.
- Never go back into the home until an Ottawa Fire Services representative tells you it is safe to do so.
Mayor Jim Watson, Councillor Mark Taylor, Chair of Community and Protective Services, and Councillor Shad Qadri, Stittsville Ward, kicked off Fire Prevention Week this afternoon at Fire Station 46 in Stittsville. Mayor Watson praised Ottawa Fire Services for their promotion of fire safety messages throughout the year with initiatives promoting Wake Up and its carbon monoxide alarm program for seniors.
“I encourage Ottawa residents to practice fire safety, not just this week, but every week of the year,” said Mayor Watson. “Ottawa Fire Services not only protects us but also gives us the education and tools we need to protect ourselves.”
During the kick-off Ottawa Fire Services staged a demonstration of a smoke alarm for people with hearing impairments. When a traditional alarm would emit a piercing noise, the demonstrated alarm flashes a bright light.
“There are tools and equipment in place to ensure everyone in Ottawa, regardless of age, income or ability, can prevent fires from occurring and escaping safely when they do occur,” said Councillor Taylor. “I hope all residents take time this week to make sure they are taking fire prevention seriously and that they have two ways out.”
“Too many people install working smoke alarms in their homes and do nothing more to prepare for the occurrence of a fire,” said Ottawa Fire Chief John deHooge. “Smoke alarms are vital, but you also need to know how to respond when they go off. Everyone needs to have a fire escape plan that includes a primary and secondary escape route.”
Throughout the week, Ottawa Fire Services will have displays and activities at libraries, shopping centres, an Ottawa 67s game and all Home Depot outlets. You can find a list of these locations on ottawa.ca.
