Marianhill Achieves Highest Ranking in National Accreditation Survey

Accreditation Canada has announced that Marianhill Inc. a long-term care home and community services provider has been awarded Accreditation with Exemplary Standing. This is the highest level achievable under the Accreditation Canada Standards and one only a few organizations have achieved.

Accreditation Canada provides four different levels of awards; no accreditation, accreditation, accreditation with commendation, and the highest recognition - accreditation with exemplary standing. As noted by Accreditation Canada, a decision of “Accredited with Exemplary Standing” means an organization has attained the highest level of performance and quality in achieving the majority of required elements in the accreditation program.

Organizations are evaluated based on their performance against many national standards of excellence and required organizational practices for quality and resident safety. In March, three surveyors from Accreditation Canada came to Marianhill for a three day survey of all programs reviewing documentation and performance data, observing care processes, interviewing patients, families, staff, physicians, and community partners.

This on-site review involved the surveyors measuring Marianhill’s performance over 520 Quality Dimensions. A score of 97% was achieved. The debriefing by the survey team with staff, management and board members focused on the medication management system, the multiple community programs and human resource enhancements.

“This outstanding achievement illustrates our commitment to quality and excellence across all areas of the care we provide in the Home as well as in the community. We are very pleased with the importance our staff put on resident safety and quality improvement in their day to day work,” says Linda Tracey, CEO.

In 2010 Marianhill undertook a number of significant changes which have contributed to the success on its Accreditation. The improvements seen since then were acknowledged by Accreditation Canada. A new scheduling protocol for staff was implemented which resulted in consistency of assignment for all front line staff, both full and part-time. This has had a major impact in the provision of care, as staff is working together implementing new programs, addressing infection control issues, and working on quality improvement activities. Marianhill also has completed a collaborative learning project through Residents First, delivered by Health Quality Ontario.

Board Chair, Patricia Egan, stated “" The Board is extremely proud of the management team and staff and realize how hard they have worked to achieve Exemplary Standing. Their efforts have been acknowledged with this award. This is a great accomplishment for a home in our community.”

Background:

Marianhill Inc. is a charitable not for profit organization founded by the Grey Sisters of the Immaculate Conception. It is comprised of 139 long-term care beds, 21 complex continuing care beds (including 3 palliative care beds) a 10 bed dementia respite unit (the McCluskey Centre) adult day programs in Pembroke, Petawawa, Killaloe and Barry’s Bay, Assisted Living Services in Riverview Apartments in Petawawa and Fairfields in Eganville, as well as a in-home caregiver respite program throughout Renfrew County (MATCH).

Accreditation Canada is a not-for-profit, independent organization which provides national and international health care organizations with an external peer review process to assess and improve the services they provide to their patients and clients based on standards of excellence. Health care organizations that participate in Accreditation Canada’s accreditation programs are evaluating their performance against national standards of excellence. These standards examine all aspects of health care, from patient safety and ethics, to staff training and partnering with the community. Health care staff devote time and resources to learn how to improve what they are doing so they can provide the best possible care and service to their patients and clients.
