Ceremony Celebrates New Surgical Centre Named After Local Donor

Queensway Carleton Hospital officials were joined by the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario’s Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation today to celebrate another major milestone in the construction of the third phase of its restructuring redevelopment project – the opening of 10 new operating rooms and a new Central Sterilization and Reprocessing (CSR) Department, located in the new four-storey tower on the western edge of the hospital’s campus.

The Garrett Family Surgical Centre is named after Carey and Nancy Garrett and their two children Ryan and Meaghan. “It was important for us as a family to support the Queensway Carleton Hospital because of its essential role in providing health care in our community,” said Carey. “We have had a long relationship with the hospital and have all volunteered there. My wife is a nurse and has worked on a surgical floor, so when this opportunity arose, it seemed like a perfect fit for our family.”

“Today’s opening celebration is one of the final steps leading to the completion of this four-storey structure. It will not only provide an enhanced and expanded work environment for our staff and physicians, but it allows our surgical programs to continue to expand and evolve to ensure QCH is providing leading edge services to our patients,” said Tom Schonberg, President & CEO of Queensway Carleton Hospital. “Reaching this milestone demonstrates the provincial government’s and the community’s support for this much needed new facility that our community needs and deserves. It also positions QCH for future expansion and growth in response to continued growth in the western part of the city and the Ottawa Valley.”

“Adding ten new operating rooms at Queensway Carleton Hospital will make a real difference for people in our community,” said Bob Chiarelli, MPP Ottawa West-Nepean. “This has been an outstanding year for the QCH. The McGuinty government is proud to partner with staff and the community to expand services and cut wait times.”

Ron Prehogan, Chair of the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation Board says, “The Care Grows West campaign was always about more than bricks and mortar…it was about more outstanding compassionate care that QCH is known and loved for. Thousands of critically needed surgeries will take place each year in this new facility and provide for a larger and more comforting post surgical rehabilitation area….it is amazing to see the improvements taking shape here. On behalf of our QCH Foundation, we are grateful to all our donors who supported Care Grows West and who have made today a reality. We would also like to thank the family of Carey and Nancy Garrett for their outstanding support…it is with great pride that we are celebrating the opening and the naming of the Garrett Family Surgical Centre today.”

“The Queensway Carleton Hospital provides exemplary care to patients in Ottawa and the western part of our region, and with the opening of these new operating rooms and the support services which go with them, we are ensuring QCH continues to be a leader and major partner in the development and implementation of new and innovative procedures and services,” says Gerry Barker, Chair of the QCH Board of Directors. “With the support from the Garrett family and other donors to the Care Grows West Campaign, our hospital is able to ensure our surgical programs and resources are of the highest quality. For that, our community thanks you.”

The $126 million Phase 3 Redevelopment Project includes a new, 140,000 square foot, four-storey structure which will have capacity to add one additional floor in the future. It includes:
  • 10 new operating room suites
  • increased endoscopy capacity from two to three suites;
  • expansion and enhancement of ambulatory programs and services;
  • addition of new dialysis service with 15 stations serving 100 patients.

Another 70,000 square feet of renovations in the existing facility are also part of the project and includes:
  • expansion and renovations to the Diagnostic Imaging Department;
  • a new Cardiopulmonary Unit which is triple in size of the old facilities;
  • addition of a second MRI and second CT scanner;
  • renewal of Laboratory, Pharmacy, administrative and support services.
