Ottawa Public Health 2011 Annual Report

Ottawa – Yesterday evening at the Ottawa Board of Health meeting, Ottawa Public Health (OPH) officially released its 2011 Annual Report, which demonstrates how OPH works with the community to improve the health of all Ottawa residents through health promotion, protection and disease prevention programs.

In 2011, OPH:

  • Conducted more than 12,400 food premises inspections at approximately 5,200 establishments
  • Provided services for over 20,000 clients at the sexual health clinics and centres
  • Managed 175 outbreaks of infectious diseases, which affected 2,995 adults and children
  • Helped 1,062 children achieve better dental health through the Healthy Smiles Ontario Program
  • Administered approximately 10,000 doses of the human papilloma virus vaccine to Grade 8 girls
  • Provided approximately 11,000 individuals with helmet fitting and injury prevention information
  • Partnered with The Ottawa Hospital’s Healthy Lifestyle and Diabetes Program and the Bruyère Academic Family Health Team Diabetes Program to deliver the Workplace Health Diabetes Project, reaching over 1,180 employees in 26 different workplaces

“Many of the featured stories in this report include personal accounts from clients about how OPH programs have improved their quality of life,” said Ottawa Board of Health Chair, Councillor Diane Holmes. “Their stories demonstrate how OPH works every day to improve the health of Ottawa residents.”

“Our vision is to make Ottawa a community where people are healthy, safe and actively engaged in their well-being,” said Dr. Isra Levy, Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health. “Whether it is providing new parents with information on healthy child development or assisting a client in the removal of bed bugs, the stories in our 2011 Annual Report show how OPH is turning that vision into reality and improving Ottawa’s health.”

The Annual Report gives OPH the opportunity to thank community partners, other City of Ottawa departments, volunteers and sponsors for their continued support and contributions to public health programs and services. The report also thanks and acknowledges the leadership and support of the Ottawa Board of Health.
