Dedication of the Largest Palliative Care Unit in Canada
June 29, 2011, Ottawa, ON. After five years and 1.6 million dollars in donations from the Ottawa community, the transformation of Canada’s largest academic palliative unit is now complete.
With the $250,000 donation from local philanthropist, William Shenkman, the William and Maureen Shenkman Palliative Care Unit was officially dedicated in a ceremony at Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital today.
“Maureen and I have always been impressed by the incredible care provided at Bruyère, we’re honoured to be associated with this organization,” claims William Shenkman.
``We set out to make the palliative care unit feel less like a hospital and more like a home,” says incoming Bruyère Foundation chair, Dave Ready. “The generous donors of Ottawa certainly rose to the challenge.”
The Palliative Care program at Bruyère Continuing Care is dedicated to relieving suffering and enhancing the quality of life for people living with advanced cancer or other terminal illnesses. Bruyère’s Palliative Care team provides the pain and symptom management, guidance, information and compassion needed by patients and their families during difficult and emotional times. Our program is the largest academic palliative care unit in Canada and a leading voice for advancing care and improving the quality of life for terminally ill patients and their loved ones.
