Approximately 2,000 new health care professional graduates of the Consortium national de formation en santé (CNFS) programs are providing health care services in French in minority Francophone communities throughout the country

OTTAWA, April 18, 2011
– A recent review of the placements of 2006-2007 and 2008-2009 CNFS graduates has confirmed that 86% of them work for health care institutions and community organizations that serve minority Francophone communities, and 79% of them work in their province of origin.

Moreover, the latest data compiled to assess the CNFS results in 2010-2011 confirm and support the relevant and important mandate and role that the CNFS has had since its creation in 2003:
  • 48 new programs created and 42 existing French-language health care programs supported by the CNFS;
  • more than 6,000 students enrolled in CNFS programs;
  • close to 2,300 CNFS graduates;
  • more than 12,300 health care professional have attended almost 1,140 professional development sessions organized by the CNFS; and
  • close to 260 research projects on the health of minority Francophone communities have been supported by the CNFS.

The CNFS is a pan-Canadian organization that includes 11 teaching1, university and college institutions that offer programs in French in different health care disciplines, supported by regional2 partners who make it easier to access these programs.

The ultimate goal of this strategic alliance is to increase the presence and contribution of Francophone health care professionals and researchers in Canada to improve access to quality French-language health care services that are adapted to the needs of minority Francophone communities.

As pointed out by Raymonde Gagné, co-Chair of the CNFS and President of the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface: “The CNFS is a unique, innovative, profitable and sustainable model of pan-Canadian collaboration at every level, not only national and provincial/territorial, but also regional and inter-institutional.”

Since its creation, the CNFS’ programs and initiatives have been made possible through funding from Health Canada through the Roadmap for Canada’s Linguistic Duality, as well as through their sustained commitment and collaboration. As pointed out by Dominic Giroux, co-Chair of the CNFS and President of Université Laurentienne: “We are proud to serve as a model of a successful partnership and to support the federal government in achieving its health objectives in minority Francophone communities. Together, we make a real contribution to the well-being and growth of these communities.”
