May, Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month

Walk a Mile in Her Shoes

The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence May 7th 2011 at 10 a.m. at Complexe JR Brisson in Casselman

Within the context of the sexual assault awareness and prevention month, the organizing committee would like to officially launch the International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence. The second annual event will take place in Prescott-Russell on the 7th of May 2011 from 10 a.m. until 1p.m.

The Centre Novas - CALACS francophone de Prescott-Russell in partnership with the Emergency Services of Prescott-Russell, the Casselman Fire Department, the École élémentaire et secondaire publique L'Académie de la Seigneurie and Aurèle Poirier would like to invite our community leaders to show their solidarity towards the fight against sexual assault by walking one mile in high heeled shoes.

We know that one woman in three will experience at least one form of violence during her lifetime and that, one woman is raped every 17 minutes in Canada (Regroupement québécois de CALACS, 2000). The impact of violence against women is not limited uniquely to them. Men will also feel the impact when a woman they know (child, wife, mother, sister, colleague) is sexually assaulted.

According to Sabrina Rodrigue, Project Coordinator for the Emergency Services of Prescott-Russell, «We are proud to be involved as we are well aware that this cause is a reality and that together we will be able to break the taboos and thus reduce the frequency of sexual assaults in the region of Prescott-Russell.»

The challenge is launched to the schools and businesses of all kinds to form teams and come and walk together. The goal is to have 50 walkers. For a small fee of $5, walkers should reserve a pair of shoes by calling Centre Novas.

This year as a fund raising activity, we will accept donations of unused gold jewellery and money, which will be used for prevention programs in schools. We would like to thank the Prescott-Russell Coalition to End Violence Towards Women and Caisse Populaire Nouvel Horizon for their financial support.
