New Addictions Centre Begins Construction
January 18, 2011 – A ceremony was held last week to celebrate the construction of a new centre in Ottawa to serve people with addictions who need assistance with withdrawal management (formerly known as ‘detox’).
The Ottawa Withdrawal Management Centre is currently housed in a less-than-adequate building in the city’s Byward Market. The new 15,000 square feet structure is scheduled to open in June, 2011 and is located on Montreal Road. It will provide segregated services for men and women of the Champlain region in both English and French.
The groundbreaking ceremony was particularly rewarding for local health officials who have worked diligently for several years to bring this important project to fruition. “Helping those in need is a priority of the McGuinty Government. That’s why we are funding the construction of the new Ottawa Withdrawal Management Centre at 1777 Montreal Road. This means a new 26-bed centre that will effectively address issues around drug and alcohol addiction in our community,” said Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services and Minister Responsible for Francophone Affairs, and MPP for Ottawa-Vanier.
Staff at the centre monitor withdrawal symptoms, assess clients for subsequent treatment, and offer education and follow-up services including telephone support. The centre’s operations are funded by the Champlain LHIN. Montfort is the sponsoring hospital, and the agency that runs the facility is called Montfort Renaissance.
“The new centre will provide high-quality care and prevent emergency room visits as well as hospital admissions,” said Dr. Robert Cushman, Champlain LHIN CEO. “This is another example of the LHIN’s commitment to reducing the burden of illness caused by mental health conditions and problematic substance abuse.”
