Supporters Raise Record Amount for Manulife Walk for Memories in support of Alzheimer Society

388 WALKERS RAISED RECORD AMOUNT OF OVER $148,000 AT MANULIFE WALK FOR MEMORIES IN SUPPORT OF THE ALZHEIMER SOCIETY OF OTTAWA AND RENFREW COUNTY

The Manulife Walk for Memories, Ottawa’s premier indoor fundraising walk held on January 31st inside Carleton University Fieldhouse at the conclusion of January’s Alzheimer Awareness Month, raised a record amount of over $148,000 to benefit the work of the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County. At this 15th annual event, 388 walkers, thousands of donors, hundreds of volunteers, and dozens of sponsors including the Leading the Walk sponsors of Collins Barrow Chartered Accountants, Team Scotiabank, and St. Joseph Communications combined forces to make an incredible difference in supporting people and families coping with Alzheimer’s disease.

Many of the participants took on the Distance Challenges of 1, 3, 5, 8, and 10 km sponsored by: Alavida Lifestyles/The Ravines; Shabinsky Family Foundation; Giant Tiger; CTV Max Keeping; and Watchful Care.

Event proceeds will make a tremendous difference in providing support, education, and promotion of research to help the 13,000 people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in Ottawa and Renfrew County as well as their families and caregivers. For every person affected by Alzheimer’s disease, 10 to 12 others are directly impacted. These include family members, friends, neighbours, employers and healthcare workers.

Ms. Chris Donahoe, raised the highest amount from an individual with the amount of $8,210. Her name will now be entered in a draw of all the top fundraisers from each Walk for Memories event across Ontario for a chance to win an all-inclusive 7-day tropical vacation for two. Honourable mention to our 2nd place individual winner Mrs. Joan McKee with $4,905. Our congratulations as well to Team Scotiabank for raising $12,227 which is the most money from a team. Also, a big cheer to Omni Walkers for being the winner of the Fittest Team in going 40 laps that equals 10 km.

The Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County would like to extend its sincere thanks to the Manulife Walk for Memories’ leading the walk partners of Collins Barrow Chartered Accountants under the leadership of Ottawa Managing Partner Randy Tivy and Principal Tracey Pagé, Scotiabank under the leadership of Branch Managers Tom Primeau and Graham West, and St. Joseph Communications with Melissa Clark as lead. Much thanks as well to Carleton University Services for their exceptional support.
