Health Canada awards nearly $462,000 to the Consortium national de formation en santé for its language training and cultural adaptation project designed to strengthen health training programs delivered in French

OTTAWA, September 28, 2010 – The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq has confirmed Health Canada funding for the projet de Formation linguistique et d’adaptation culturelle, submitted by the Consortium national de formation en santé (CNFS) and approved under the Official Languages Health Contribution Program. The CNFS is very pleased to receive this funding, which complements the core funding provided through the very productive and far-reaching partnership it has forged with Health Canada since its creation in 2003.

The funding being awarded to the CNFS will allow its member institutions and regional partners to pursue their activities in the language training and cultural adaptation field and to achieve the following main objectives, namely:
  • Equipping bilingual or Francophone health care professionals who were trained in English and who are currently employed in health systems so they can offer French-language health care and services that are linguistically and culturally appropriate;
  • Supporting these professionals, after their cultural and linguistic skills have been strengthened, in maintaining their new skills so they can help offer expanded French-language health services.

The CNFS is a Canada-wide organization which brings together a range of organizations_11 postsecondary institutions (universities and colleges) offering study programs in French in various health disciplines, and four regional partners all aiming at improving access to health training programs delivered in French. As Raymonde Gagné, Co-chair of the CNFS and President of the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface explains, “The CNFS is an exemplary partnership model that facilitates wider deployment of training programs that would otherwise be inaccessible to many often more modest and scattered Francophone communities.”

The ultimate goal of this strategic alliance that is the CNFS is to increase the numbers and contribution of Francophone health care professionals and researchers in Canada, in order to increase access to quality French-language health services tailored to the needs of Francophone minority communities. “The tangible and sustainable results that the CNFS has obtained since its creation in 2003 confirm that the Consortium is truly contributing to these communities’ wellness and development,” points out Dominic Giroux, Co-chair of the CNFS and President of Laurentian University.
