H1N1 Flu Vaccination Clinics open on Monday: Targeted to residents who need it most

Ottawa – Ottawa Public Health (OPH) will begin providing free pandemic H1N1flu vaccinations to Ottawa residents who need it most at its citywide clinics on October 26.

The province has informed OPH that the City will receive its first shipment of the H1N1 vaccine this week.

As the initial supply from the province will be limited, OPH will focus on providing the vaccine to the following groups of residents in the first seven to 14 days of operation:
  • People 6 months old to 65-years-old with chronic medical conditions
  • Pregnant women
  • Healthy children between 6 months and five years of age
  • Health care workers
  • Household contacts and care providers infants younger than six months and people with compromised immune systems

Pregnant women will also have the option to receive the non-adjuvanted H1N1 vaccine, which is expected to be delivered in mid-November.

“These groups are the most vulnerable from complications associated with the H1N1 flu virus or are the most in need of having access to the vaccine as soon as it is available,” said Dr. Isra Levy, Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health. “After this initial period of focus and as more supply is delivered by the province, all Ottawa residents who need or want the H1N1 vaccine will be able to get it.”

Based on surveys and data from previous years it is estimated that up to 40% of the population will seek the H1N1 vaccine this year.

“The H1N1 vaccine has been approved and it is safe,” said Levy. “It is the best way to protect you and your family from the flu.”

As more vaccine supply is delivered, more information on when and where all residents can get the vaccine will be released.

“The City’s H1N1 strategy is designed to provide residents with easy access to vaccinations close to where they live,” said Councillor Diane Deans, Chair of the Community and Protective Service Committee. “The plan is flexible and adaptable and includes vaccination clinics in the urban, suburban and rural areas of the City.”

A complete list of the five fixed vaccination sites and several more temporary and roving sites is attached.
