New Regional Hip and Knee Replacement Program Already Helping Hundreds of Patients

June 9, 2010 – To continue our celebration of Seniors’ Month, we would like to highlight a program that focuses on two surgical procedures that are in high demand.

The Regional Hip and Knee Replacement Program, launched by the Champlain LHIN in January 2010, improves quality of care through better coordination of services.

It introduces an innovative ‘central intake referral process’ to evenly distribute wait lists among surgeons.

Multi-disciplinary, health professional teams are also important to the program’s success. For each patient, these teams conduct a detailed assessment, provide education, and if appropriate, refer the patient to non-surgical services, such as physiotherapy.

Patients who are surgical candidates can choose their hospital, their surgeon, or opt for the next available surgeon.

By the end of May 2010, more than 1,400 patients across the Champlain region had already been assessed in the program. To reduce the waiting time for their procedure, many patients have chosen the next available surgeon.

“This LHIN-led project shows that we can serve patients better and gain efficiencies simply by rethinking how we deliver health care,” says MPP Bob Chiarelli (Ottawa West-Nepean) “As a result, patients, doctors, and the healthcare system as a whole all benefit.”
