Recruitment Committee Seeks Applicants For New Family Residency Bursary
Do you know someone in medical school? Is that someone in a residency program for family medicine? If so, this message is for you.
The Upper Ottawa Valley Medical Recruitment Committee is now seeking applicants for the newly-established Family Residency Bursary named in honour of Dr. Joseph Foohey.
In 2010, to generate interest in the bursary, the Committee has decided to award one bursary valued at $3,000 to a doctor in a family medicine residency program to assist with the cost of their educational expenses.
It is hoped that this will generate a good number of first-year applicants as well as recruitment contacts for the Committee. In future years, two $1,500 bursaries will be awarded.
While this bursary is open to all family medicine residents who are considering a career in family medicine, priority will be given to applicants who are planning to establish a family practice in one of the communities served by the Upper Ottawa Valley Medical Recruitment Committee: The City of Pembroke, the Town of Petawawa, the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, the Township of Bonnechere Valley, the Township of Laurentian Valley, North Algona Wilberforce Township and the Township of Whitewater Region.
“We are very pleased to be able to offer this bursary as one of our Committee’s recruitment tools as well as recognizing the outstanding contribution of one of our community’s family physicians who has practiced medicine for more than five decades,” said Recruitment Committee Chairwoman Debbie Robinson.
Applications are being circulated throughout the communities served as well as to local physicians and residency programs, and can be found on the Committee’s website (www.UOVmedicalrecruit.ca) as well as that of the Pembroke Regional Hospital (www.pemreghos.org).
The Committee hopes that members of the community will also help to circulate the information in order to allow for a good number of applicants in this inaugural year for the bursary.
Dr. Joseph Foohey is one of the most respected family doctors to practice in the Upper Ottawa Valley. He has practiced medicine for more than five decades, serving thousands of patients and becoming an extraordinary role model for new family doctors.
All applications should be submitted to the Upper Ottawa Valley Medical Recruitment Committee, ATTN: Dr. Foohey Family Medicine Bursary Program Selection Committee, c/o Upper Ottawa Valley Medical Recruitment Committee, Box 641, Pembroke, ON K8A 6X9. The deadline for applications is January 31, 2010.
