Position:  Professional Practice Consultant (Nursing Education)

Overview:
The Professional Practice Consultant will provide clinical leadership, support and consultation and contribute to a collaborative, client-centred model of care. This position involves mentoring and coaching staff in order to enhance current service delivery, establish best practices, facilitate the growth and development of nursing team members and foster collaboration and team work.

The Professional Practice Consultant will contribute to projects advancing the outcomes of The Royal Strategic Plan. The Professional Practice Consultant will also plan, implement, evaluate and co-ordinate the ongoing nursing student educational activities at ROMHC.

Duties:

Leadership

  • Anticipates emergent and future issues/ changes providing leadership and vision in short and long term planning
  • Supports nursing staff in projects related to target indicators of the Royal Strategic Plan
  • Participates in program planning, development and evaluation processes
  • Manages change effectively, demonstrating knowledge and commitment to effective change strategies
  • The position is directly involved in the recruitment process, interviews, input in the creation of positions and performance planning.
  • The position is involved in skill mix review process, and the providing of recommendations to this process.
  • The position is directly involved in professional practice investigations, and the providing of direction regarding discipline/termination of employment.
  • Consults with managers on Learning Plans which may be part of disciplinary process as well as professional practice issues.
  • Represents the Royal Nursing Education and Professional Practice on relevant internal and external committees.

Education
  • Identifies learning needs, promotes the professional development of nursing staff and assists in the application of knowledge/theory to practice
  • Initiates and provides leadership for educational activities and skills development programs aimed at developing specialized knowledge, skills and competencies related to the unique patient needs of the Forensic/Correctional setting.
  • Plan, implement, coordinate and evaluate campus nursing orientations
  • Oversee the co-ordination of clinical student placements in undergraduate and graduate nursing programs
  • Work with Manager of Patient Care Services to identify ongoing learning needs and supports for staff

Nursing Practice
  • Develop and maintain expert knowledge in best practices in psychiatric/mental health nursing with a specialization in Forensic and Correctional nursing care.
  • Demonstrate to staff nurses and nursing students the art and science of holistic nursing care.
  • Be a resource to other nurses in evidence informed nursing practice

Research
  • Contributes to nursing knowledge base through presentation or publication of program evaluation or research findings
  • Promotes and facilitates research and academic activities
  • Utilizes, conducts and evaluates research to advance both Nursing knowledge and practice.
  • Work in a manner that is in compliance with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of the Royal.
  • Ensure a work environment that is conductive to the Royal’s Harassment-Free Workplace Policy
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
  • Master’s degree in nursing.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in education, planning, organizing, implementation and evaluation; human resources and labour relations.
  • Demonstrated leadership, superior problem solving, critical thinking skills and strong team building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all staff
  • CPR certification within the last 12 months
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills.
  • Maintain ROHCG mandatory training requirements.
  • Proficient computer skills including Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading and writing. Bilingual (French/English) level A- is considered an asset.
